HVLS fans improved heat distribution and thermal comfort in a 5-metre-high warehouse

ABOUT LINTEX

LINTEX is a Swedish family-owned company founded in 1983. The company develops and manufactures writing boards, office screens and acoustic solutions, with its headquarters and production facilities located in Nybro, Sweden.

WORTH KNOWING ABOUT THE INSTALLATION

  • 2 Northern Air® HVLS fans, each 3 metres in diameter
  • Installed in March and May 2019
  • Installed in a warehouse with a ceiling height of 5 metres
  • Supplemented the existing ceiling-mounted heating system
  • Recommended by the local installation company Trap+
  • Designed to improve heat distribution and make better use of the existing heating

HEATING AROUND THE CLOCK – BUT EMPLOYEES WERE STILL COLD

Despite the unit heaters running almost constantly during the winter months, LINTEX struggled to distribute the heat effectively throughout the warehouse.

Warm air from the ceiling-mounted heaters naturally rose and accumulated near the 5-metre-high ceiling, while the employees working below were still experiencing an uncomfortably cold working environment.

The problem was made worse by the way the heating system was controlled. The unit heaters were installed near the ceiling, while the thermostats were positioned at working height. Because much of the heat remained trapped above the occupied zone, the thermostats continued calling for heat – and the heaters kept running.

So the problem was not a lack of heating capacity. LINTEX was already producing plenty of heat. The challenge was getting that heat down to where it was actually needed.

Rather than replacing the existing heating system, LINTEX therefore looked for a way to distribute the available heat more effectively.

STARTED WITH ONE - BUT SOON EXPANDED TO TWO

Local installation company Trap+ recommended an HVLS ceiling fan to move the accumulated warm air back down into the occupied zone and create a more even temperature throughout the warehouse.

In March 2019, LINTEX installed the first Northern Air® fan in one section of the warehouse to test the solution.

The effect was remarkably quick. Less than an hour after the fan was installed, the unit heater in that section switched off automatically. The heat that had previously accumulated near the ceiling was now being distributed throughout the space and reaching both the employees and the thermostat.

Employees noticed the difference too. Based on the initial results, LINTEX decided to install a second fan in the other section of the warehouse just two months later.

I honestly did not expect the fan to make as much difference as it does. It runs at a very low speed, but still moves a lot of air around.”

MAKING BETTER USE OF THE EXISTING HEATING

With the HVLS fans, LINTEX could make better use of its existing heating system without replacing it.

By continuously redistributing warm air from ceiling level towards the occupied zone, the fans helped create a more even temperature throughout the warehouse and reduced the need for the unit heaters to run continuously.

There was another noticeable benefit as well. With the heating units running less frequently, employees experienced less background noise from the heating system, while the slowly rotating HVLS fans themselves were barely noticeable.

FROM COLD TO COMFORTABLE

The difference was particularly noticeable to the employees working in the warehouse. Before the HVLS fans were installed, winter could be uncomfortable. Jette, one of the employees, summed up the situation with a smile:

“Can I get a snowsuit? It is really cold!”

For her, the cold warehouse had made the winter months particularly tough. After the fans were installed and the warm air was distributed more evenly throughout the space, the working environment became considerably more comfortable.

For LINTEX, the installation therefore addressed two challenges at once: improving thermal comfort for employees while making more efficient use of the heat already being produced.

“The advantage is that the fans can circulate the air during the summer and make sure that we get all our heat distributed in the room during the winter. It has made the difference that we now have a constant temperature in the room and a nice, warm and comfortable indoor climate.”
