REDUCTION IN THE INLET AIR TEMPERATURE

Three slowly rotating giant ceiling fans from Nordicco has caused for the ventilation system in one of the mucicipality’s sports arenas to runs 6 hours less a day, a significant reduction in the inlet air temperature, completely balanced temperature between floor and ceiling, all while the electricity consumption has been vastly reduced.

Significant energy savings and better indoor climate

Norddjurs Municipality is constantly testing and trialling new ways to reduce their energy consumption. One of the focus areas is the energy consumed in the municipality’s sports hall, where the heating requires a lot of energy to maintain a given temperature.

INSTALLATION OF THREE HVLS-FANS

After being presented with Nordicco’s giant ceiling fans – the so-called HVLS fans – the municipality placed three of the fans with a diameter of 3.0 meters in one of the municipality’s sports halls. In the hall, there’s 11 meters to the ceiling, and Karl Juul was instantly impressed with the effect.

Perhaps I was a little skeptical initially before we hung up the fans, but already after half an hour I could feel a com- pletely different heat down by the floor. All the heat that automatically rises and is below the ceiling is pushed back down to the floor by the three ceiling fans, so that the temperature at the floor quickly increased by 3-4 degrees, he says.

THE VENTILATION SYSTEM RUNS FOR A SHORTER PERIOD OF TIME

To maintain the temperature in the hall, a ventilation system supplied the building with hot air in the time period between 6.30am and 12.30pm and again from 16.00 to 22.30, i.e. almost 13 hours a day, which required a lot of energy.

After installing the ceiling fans, we have now reduced the time the ventilation system is running to only 8 hours a day. At the same time, we have also managed to lower the temperature of the inlet air supply. In the past, we supplied the hall with 37 degree hot air, but now as the fans help increase the floorlevel temperature, we have already lowered the inlet temperature, so here in early January we set the inlet air supply temperature to 24.5 degrees, with an outdoor temperature of plus three celsius degrees. And we are still working to lower it further. All in all, something that has significantly reduced our energy consumption,” says a satisfied Karl Juul.

He says that the municipality strives to maintain a temperature in the hall, where various sports are practiced, at 17.5 degrees. Before the Municipality installed the fans, the temperature levels at the floor and at the ceiling were very different, but now they are almost the same, with fluctuations of less than 0.4 degrees, so according to Karl Juul, it looks very promising for the future.

GREAT POTENTIAL IN THE BIG FANS

“I have only words of praise for Nordicco and their giant fans. The collaboration has worked flawlessly from the begin- ning and their systems have fully lived up to our expectations,” says Karl Juul and continues:

“Going into the future, I expect that the ceiling fans will help us to further reduce the consumption of district heating, let us operate with a lower inlet air supply temperature and at the same time reduce our electricity consumption. Not to mention the added benefit of us getting a significantly better indoor climate in the hall.”

Based on his experience, he greatly recommends others who have large rooms or halls with high ceilings to make use of the slowly rotating ceiling fan to improve heat distribution, minimize energy consumption and ensure a better indoor climate.

“Here we are on the threshold of winter and the temperature is slowly falling outside, I note that I only need to raise the inlet air supply temperature by 0.5 degrees for every 5 degrees the temperature falls outside, he concludes.”
